Completion of the Third Committee’s work at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly

SLOVENIA, November 21 - During its regular autumn session, the Third Committee addresses human rights issues, mainly through general discussions and interactive dialogues involving special rapporteurs, independent experts, chairs of treaty bodies and special representatives of the UN system. Each year, the General Assembly also takes note of the annual report presented by the President of the UN Human Rights Council.

Slovenia has focused its attention on key areas within the Third Committee’s purview, including the rights of women, the elderly and children, human rights and the environment, minorities, the human rights situation around the world and the role of civil society. Slovenia is also actively involved in other topics discussed. In these areas, it participated in interactive dialogues with UN experts and in negotiations on resolutions.

The Slovenian youth delegate to the UN also participated in the meeting, emphasising in his address the challenges facing young people. As a current member of the UN Security Council, Slovenia also drew attention to the human rights situation in Ukraine, the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia and the Central African Republic.

The Committee also adopted resolutions on ageing, children's rights, human rights to drinking water and sanitation, minorities, persons with disabilities, the safety of journalists and the issue of impunity, violence against migrant women, the prevention of torture, social development, the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of digital technologies and national human rights institutions. Resolutions addressing the human rights situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, in Syria, Myanmar, Iran and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and a resolution on the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, were also adopted.
