Moscow enhances transport relations with three African countries
The announcement followed meetings between Russian Deputy Transport Minister Dmitry Zverev and officials from multiple nations during the Global Forum on Transport Connectivity in Istanbul, Türkiye, last week. As part of the agreements, Moscow and the three African countries will establish joint “Working Groups on Transport” to ensure consistent dialogue between departments and to boost collaborative projects aimed at improving transport connectivity.
Russia has recently expanded its partnerships across Africa in areas such as aviation, railways, roads, and maritime transport, making the continent a strategic foreign policy focus.
South Sudan’s transport minister, Lam Akol Ajawin, expressed interest last month in learning from Russia’s experience and adopting its technologies. Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie also held talks with Russian officials in May to enhance cooperation in logistics and transport.
In April, Russia announced the creation of a direct shipping route between the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk and Lagos, Nigeria, scheduled to launch in mid-2025. A similar shipping route from Novorossiysk to Kenya’s port of Mombasa began last December, with the maiden cargo including Kenyan tea.
During the Istanbul forum, Russian and Moroccan officials also discussed increasing the number of flights between the two countries due to rising demand, as reported by Morocco World News.
